What other people think of you, for better or worse, does not define who you are. You have no obligation to pick up other people’s thoughts and make them your own. Whether positive or negative, the opinions of others are always fluctuating. You may sometimes be in their favor, but then sooner or later you’ll fall out of favor. If you spend your life being defined by what other people think about you, you’ll never find lasting peace. You’ll end up being blown apart by the ferocity of changing emotions, with nowhere to call your center. In fact, I’d say that it’s dangerous to believe what other people say or think about you. If they shower you with praise and glory, don’t believe it as incontrovertibly true. If they hurl insults and accusations at you, don’t believe it as a defining feature of yourself. Yes, listen for valid points, but be very careful of picking up other people’s thoughts and making them your own. The way I see it, each of our minds has enough thoughts in them alone to sort through so that we don’t need to be taking on anyone else’s thoughts in as well. It’s like garbage—we have enough of our own crap to throw out and sort through for recycling to waste time going around and collecting all the garbage of the neighborhood to mix in with our own. Not all thoughts are garbage, some thoughts are beautiful and fill the world with kindness. Keep those ones on display like you keep your favorite pictures in a frame right by your bed. Let those beautiful thoughts be the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night. The other thoughts, the ones that tell you you’re worthless, put those where they belong—in the garbage! . Maybe the whole spiritual path is an elaborate system of cleaning house, except instead of doing the dishes and taking the rubbish out, it’s our thoughts that get scrubbed and cleaned and selected until all that’s left sparkles with the clear glow of true and lasting peace. #practiceyogachangeyourworld #onebreathatatime @ifilmyoga ?
