Happiness is always there, hiding in the cracks of a broken heart. The innate ability to feel joy can never be destroyed, even if it sometimes seems like it’s gone for good. There is nothing you could ever do that would make you unworthy of feeling the gift of love. There is no authority that sits as judge and jury and convicts you of a misdeed so terrible that your happiness is put in jail. Your heart remains eternally free, free to search for the smile in simple things, free to forgive yourself and others, free to fall in love with life all over again.

Be happy for no reason at all today. Just because the sun shining or because the wind is blowing. Or maybe be happy because there’s a bird chirping, a flower blooming, a fruit fruiting, a dog barking, a child playing. Or maybe be happy because there are clouds and cold, quiet and solitude, stillness and emptiness. Or maybe because there are people all around, teeming with voices and words and thoughts. Or maybe just because.

Here’s the world unfolding around you. There are a million things to be happy about. And there are a million things to freak out about. You choose. Happiness is an intrinsic part of your birthright, it’s built into the hard drive of your soul, so much so that you, like us all, hunger for it.

Problems can often seem so complicated. Happiness is often so simple, elegant. Not always evident in elaborate structures or rigid forms, happiness is emergent when the spirit shines through, when the virtue of small things and precious moments arises. Here now, with me, with you. If you take a moment and close your eyes, I bet you’ll feel it, this happiness that’s in my heart right now, beating in unison with you.
