Guess who got kicked off the steps of Supreme Court of the United States? Me! And it wasn’t for this handstand either. _ Apparently picture and handstands are fine but deep discussions about the moral character of the judiciary branch are not. I was asked to leave because I dared to ask whether the actions of the court will be seen as moral and just years down the line. _ Since Supreme Court Justices are elected for life, their moral, ethical and legal views influence and perhaps even codify the character of a generation. They outlive the politicians who appoint them and continue to rule, sometimes for decades. The court has not been without fault. It declared “separate but equal” in the morally bankrupt Plessy v. Ferguson case which essentially made racism the law of the land. The court upheld the internment of Japanese citizens like my grandfather during WWII. It took a generation before new judges were in place who looked at the egregious actions of America’s past and sought to rebalance the laws towards liberty and justice for all. _ It has often been the courts that have staked out the moral high ground, holding an apolitical place in the three branches of government. But now as the appointment of judges becomes polarized like so much of everything in our society, trust is the sovereignty of the judicial branch to uphold the values outlined in the U.S. Constitution is eroded. _ It makes me sad bc I love America and its dream of freedom. I’m a patriot even though I am not always proud of my country’s actions. I nearly cried today when I read the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson. The role of government is to ensure equal access to certain inalienable rights and among those are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
