Let's talk about injury for a moment. It's so often unspoken, sometimes filled with a sense of loss and worse, shame or guilt. Sometimes I feel like being a yoga teacher means there's this expectation that you'll never be injured or in pain. I've gotten hurt in practice and also in life and when I shared openly about it some people told me it was my fault bc I do advanced poses. I've rehabbed my injuries through practice and learned how to use yoga as a therapy. I believe in getting medical diagnosis if you have a pain that doesn't resolve itself within a few days or is the result of a sudden impact or trauma. I believe in complimentary roads to healing that often include acupuncture, massage, energy healing, physical therapy, and faith. I also believe that sometimes pain is there to teach us something, and that until we learn the lesson, the pain will be there. I've had pain that didn't fit into any explanation heal only when my heart finally opened. But one thing that I want to tell everyone is this: if you're in pain, if you're injured, don't make it worse by adding guilt or shame to the mix. If your technique was off, fix it and move on. Even if you do everything right, you still might end up with pain or injury. Yoga is a journey of healing. I wish no one ever experiences another injury in yoga or in life, but the reality of that happening is unlikely. Rather than trying to live in a protected bubble, let's be real and forgive ourselves when an injury arises and learn to use the practice as the methodology of healing that it truly is. _ #ashtangayogachallenge Day 23 is Upavistha Konasana, Wide-Angle Seated Forwars Fold. No matter how tempting it is, don't pull or force yourself into this (or any pose). The hamstrings and inner thighs require careful activation and support to enter this pose safely. The lesson is breathe, relax, trust, don't force. _ Are you practicing with me this month? For in-depth technique and alignment join my Ashtanga Primary Series course on OmStars.com.
