A friend sent me a photo of her car in Chicago and it looked like the car was sweating! This year has already been a record breaker in terms of temperatures. The reality of these temperature extremes (remember the polar vortex?) seems to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that we are in a climate crisis to me. But that’s just my opinion. _ I am a nature lover and an environmentalist. I always have been. I do not think this is a political stance. If God created the world and gave it to humankind as gift, shouldn’t we be good stewards of this miraculous planet? Doesn’t clean water, clean air and a sustainable climate benefit everyone eventually? Aren’t trees, rivers, oceans, birds, bees and other wild animals the inheritance of every single human being regardless of religion or political orientation? Doesn’t protecting these resources outweigh short-term profit maximization? _ I understand that we can’t really take care of the planet if we can’t take care of ourselves. When we are hurting and miserable we often lash out and blame. When anxiety takes over it can spawn a dangerous cold-blooded narcissism. When we feel insecure we are more likely risk everything to protect what little we have rather than lend a hand to those in need. When we feel undervalued and hopeless it becomes easier to foster hate and resentment. When you cannot pay the bills, contemplating the climate crisis seems like a luxury. _ I get it. But I’m not giving up hope on humanity. No matter how stuck any one person is, there is still potential for awakening within us all (even Mr. Orange). I’ve been hopeless and resentful, lashed out and taken illogical, narrow minded stances. I’ve been at war with myself. But I’m not there anymore. If I could wake up, so can anyone. This is why I continue to teach yoga and the spiritual path. It is my mission to spread as much light as possible to as many people as possible in what time I have remaining here.
