Before yoga was big business I was a girl on a quest for peace.

Before yoga became a fashion branded image of tall skinny goddesses in expensive clothes, I was a small girl with thick thighs practicing in old gym shorts size large trying to jump back every day. While I love clothes, your self worth isn’t tied to any outfit.

Before private equity firms started buying up family run yoga centers, I was a spiritual seeker yearning for a sangha.

Before the dream of new yoga teachers was to get sponsored by big name brands I dreamt of going to India and immersing myself in the practice. When I came back I wanted to show the world just how powerful this practice really is.

Before high tech yoga mats, I was dripping blood, sweat and tears on a crappy old broken mat every day. While I love mats that are built for practice, having the right gear doesn’t mean you’re a better yogi. Getting on your mat and being a good person make you a good yogi.

When the fad dies down, when the big brands move on to the next trend to meet their billion dollar bottom line, when the apparent glory starts to lose its shine, I’ll still be here getting on my mat every day. Yoga is a personal practice, a daily sadhana, plain and simple. It’s not about the show, it’s about the sweat. It’s not about the fabulousness (although some days you may feel like you’re soaring), it’s about practicing through the days when you feel like crap. It’s not about competition or control, it’s about empowerment and being strong enough to rise up and fight the good fight. What does it matter if you can press up into handstand if you’re not willing to take a stand for what’s right?

I see myself first and foremost as a practitioner of yoga. Then, as a teacher, I am as a torch-bearer of the sacred spiritual of this ancient practice. I am not for sale. My message is not for sale. Companies have treated me like a cash cow to maximize their profits without care and concern for my message. I created @omstarsofficial so that my voice would finally be heard unfiltered. Only when we stand together will we awaken. Stand with me. Practice with me. And be strong enough to change your world. Never give up.
