What is a Guru? The etymology of the word “guru” is said to be based on the syllables gu (गु) and ru (रु), which stands for darkness/ignorance and "light that dispels it", respectively. Following this path, the guru is one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and lights your path.

There are different types of gurus, yoga gurus, business gurus, dance gurus, music gurus, and, of course, spiritual gurus. Those teachers whose aim is to liberate you from the bondage of suffering and bring you to full enlightenment are called Sat-Guru, as in the true guru, whose purpose is to initiate spiritual seekers on the quest for awakening.

What you worship can be considered to be your guru and maybe also your God. There was a time I loved handstands so much, I think handstand was my guru. Who you follow, who you emulate, you strive to be like, whose cues for living you adhere to—this is you guru. Maybe it’s your pastor, rabbi or imam, maybe it’s someone else. But we all have a guru, someone we follow, whose loving presence lights the path for us. You may not even realize it, but if you look closely enough, you’ll see it.

God is said to be the original Guru, the most high Sat-Guru from whom all other knowledge and sparks of knowledge flow from. Whatever name you call the Infinite, Eternal, Source, Love, Shiva, Allah, Buddha Nature, Emptiness, Shunyata, Isvara, Bramha, the Universe, Life itself, Spirit, Jesus Christ, the teaching of the teacher is always present and waiting for you with kindness, forgiveness, patience and love. It’s up to you to receive the teaching and make it your life.
