This is my Mom in Chair Pose. She grew up in a time when it wasn’t trendy to be Japanese. In the post-WWII South, kids in school beat her up, called her names, told her she was ugly, teachers paraded her in front of classrooms to reinforce the Asian stereotype of top achiever (she was in fact always at the top of her class). But years later, the remnants of systemic racism still live on. Sometimes, she tells me, she thinks to herself, “Maybe they were right.”

When the narrative of otherness is internalized by members of non-dominant groups, it creates real damage to the souls of living beings. If you see ugly in the mirror because you have never felt beautiful in the eyes of the mainstream, that’s not your fault. The arbiters of culture sell a story that profits off our insecurity. The more we feel less-than, the more we buy products that pander to our desire to feel loved and belong.

Well I say, to my Mom and maybe to you too who is reading this now, no more of this. Your joy is the revolution. Don’t let anything or anyone snuff out the light within you. You are here to shine.
