It’s not that I’m irritated when I hear it, well, I guess a little irritated. But it’s more the principle of expecting things to be easy from the first go that bothers me. Yoga is hard. And while yes, this handstand is certainly not for beginners (unless you’re an experienced gymnast but a new yogi), there are many asanas that are safe for beginners to try and fail at. _ Here’s the thing—you don’t need to do a pose successfully on your first try or your first thousand tries for the inner work of yoga to happen. In fact, the poses that you find challenging offer you your biggest opportunity for growth. It’s the struggle that brings up positive change. Now, I understand that it’s hard. I know firsthand what it feels like to fail over and over again. It took me five years to balance in handstand. I failed every day for five years before I succeeded. The lessons I learned with each gal have made me who I am today. If I would have just gone right up and balanced, I would not have learned as much. _ So, when you’re jumping on to your mat, especially as a beginner, expect the practice to challenge you. Enjoy the challenge. Learn how to fail joyfully. Then pick yourself back up and try again, and again, and again.
