Meet the lesser yellow-headed vulture. In the wild, this bird is found ​from eastern Mexico south through Central America, and patchily in South America east of the Andes and south to Uruguay.​ The lesser yellow-headed vulture occupies open habitats, especially wet grasslands and marshes. As a regular inhabitant of these areas, researchers believe this vulture may serve as an indicator species for tropical wetland ecosystems since their presence or absence reflects the overall fitness and health of the habitat. Like other vulture species, this bird searches for food in continuous, soaring flight, but stays close to the ground in order to forage. They are known to frequently feed on fish and reptiles, often stopping to dine along roadways. This is a rather hazardous feeding location, and often puts vultures in danger of being struck by passing vehicles. Remember to always use caution while driving, and when it is safe to do so, reduce your speed if you spot wildlife on or near the roadway to avoid a potentially fatal collision.
