Despite their cat-like appearance and behaviors, Javan common palm civets like this one (a subspecies of the Asian palm civet), are actually more closely related to other small carnivores like weasels and mongooses. Unlike other civet species, the tail of the Asian palm civet does not have rings, but the face does appear banded like that of a raccoon. This species is rather secretive, living a solitary lifestyle and only emerging under the cover of night to hunt and catch food. The Asian palm civet is a ferocious hunter, and like other species of civet, it survives on a predominantly meat-based diet. Small animals such as rodents, lizards, snakes and frogs make up the majority of its diet, though they are also known to eat the fruits and flowers of palms, mangos and coffee. Found inhabiting tropical jungles and rainforests, this species has been drastically affected by increasing deforestation in its native region. The main reason for such extensive deforestation?
