At just one week old, Sura the spotted seal was found stranded in the wild by her rescuers. Unable to be released back into the wild, she settled into her new home @alaskasealifecenter where she has been thriving ever since. Sura was the first animal on the PHOCAS project, which aims to understand sea ice loss in the Arctic which is progressing at an unprecedented rate. Spotted seals spend much of their time and bear their pups on sea ice, making it a resource that is vital to their survival. Global warming could cause sea ice to disappear, which would force the seals further north closer to remaining ice, but further away from precious prey species. The data from PHOCAS will be used to determine habitat requirements, predict species’ resilience to changing conditions in the Arctic, and in turn, support efforts to take appropriate action. #Sura #spottedseal #seal #Arctic #cute #globalwarming #climatechange #PhotoArk #savetogether
