As a small, forest-dwelling species, the Visayan tarictic hornbill’s high-pitched call is often heard echoing through the trees well before the bird is spotted in the wild. Once relatively abundant on the islands of Negros and Panay, researchers believe there are now less than 1,000 individuals remaining. Logging and Kaingin (shifting cultivation) are popular practices throughout the hornbill’s home range which has led to extensive deforestation. In 1988, it was estimated that just four percent of forest cover remained on the island of Negros, and eight percent on Panay. Hunting and the wild pet trade are also significant threats to Visayan tarictic hornbills and a number of other species living in the greater Negros-Panay region.
