This species is one of the smallest species of cats in the world - about two times smaller than a domestic house cat. Found in India and Sri Lanka, scientists believe less than 10,000 of these cats remain in the wild. Due to habitat loss, the rusty-spotted cat will occasionally inhabit fields and plantations close to human settlements where they can easily hunt poultry. Unfortunately, these losses can take a toll on land owners, which has led to the cats being labeled as pests in parts of their natural range. Additionally, interbreeding with domestic cats and hunting (for meat) also pose as major threats to rusty-spotted cats in the wild. Exmoor Zoo has had Sri Lankan rusty-spotted cats like this one on exhibit since 2010.
