This southern vested tamandua @zootampa looks like he’s ready to dance, standing perfectly poised on his hind legs with arms outstretched. Tamanduas live throughout much of South America, and while they can be found in savannas, tropical rainforests, scrub forests, and mangroves, they most commonly occur near streams and rivers. Tamanduas mostly eat ants and termites, using their forelimbs and claws to dig up insect nests, though they also eat honey and bees. While the mouth opening at the end of their elongated snout is only about the width of a pencil eraser, their tongues can be nearly 16 inches long - perfect for slurping up tasty insects. Tamanduas are a toothless species, but have a muscular gizzard in the stomach to help them digest their food. When they are not active, tamanduas will take shelter in tree hollows. You can help protect this incredible species by avoiding animal skin products when you shop, even those marked as “faux” to ensure you are not contributing to the illegal hunting of this species.
