This cute fellow is a golden Asian mantis at the Albuquerque BioPark (@oneabq). While many insects give people the creeps, mantids seem capable of winning the affections of almost everyone with their human-like heads and statuesque figures. Praying mantids earned their name because when they are waiting for prey, they fold their front legs in an upright position as if they are folded in prayer. While this species may look angelic, don’t be fooled - the mantid is a deadly predator. With the ability to swivel its head, there’s nothing the mantid can’t see, and once a bee or fly enters its line of sight, those forearms extend with lightning quick speed, instantly snatching up its prey.
