This species was thought to be extinct in Finland due to over-hunting until the turn of the 20th century when it began to make a comeback in Finland. Compared to other reindeer, the forest subspecies is larger, with longer legs and more upward-pointing antlers. This species has a number of special adaptations that make it possible to survive during extremely harsh winters. Special bone marrow and strong circulation keep their legs warm while navigating through deep snow. Their fur is thick, but individual hairs are hollow and light, allowing for air to get trapped inside. That trapped air acts as great insulation, allowing for healthy reindeer to survive in temperatures as low as -50°C !
