This fierce raptor is a Spanish imperial eagle that calls @zoo_aquarium_madrid home. Restricted to the Iberian Peninsula, this species is most often spotted in Mediterranean forests, or in “Dehesas”, a type of wooded pasture found in Spain. Trees in these areas are vital to the survival of this raptor as they provide a safe, high place for the birds to perch, survey the ground below for prey, and build nests for their young. In more developed areas where trees are less accessible, mating pairs have begun to use power poles as nesting platforms. As a result, electrocution has become a major threat facing Spanish imperial eagles in the wild. Despite work to make power lines safe in many areas, there are still many eagles dying because of electrocution.
