This creature may look like an alien, but despite its out-of-this-world appearance, the spotted lungfish is found in bodies of water throughout central Africa where it appears to be quite common. While this species prefers to live at the bottom of pools or rivers, it is an air breathing species, relying mostly on its gills to extract air from the surrounding water. The spotted lungfish also has the ability to aestivate, which means it can go into a prolonged state of dormancy or rest during particularly hot or dry periods. Lungfish are often harvested from the wild for human consumption, but it does not appear that this practice is affecting the species’ population as a whole.
