Originally from French Guiana, but also commonly found in Suriname and Guiana, this is the blue fang tarantula. While many people might fear such a creature, this New World species is loved by many spider enthusiasts due to the skeleton-like markings on its legs and its “colorful” fangs, which appear metallic to neon blue thanks to surrounding mouthparts known as ​chelicerae​ (the fangs themselves are actually black)​.​ The blue fang tarantula is slow growing and hardy with a relatively long lifespan. This arachnid is known to be a classic burrower, creating enlarged chambers in the earth and concealing the entrance underneath leaf litter - a rather unexpected trait given the species’ other family members. The blue fang tarantula belongs to the Aviculariinae subfamily which mostly consists of tree-dwelling spiders often referred to as bird spiders because of their reputation for capturing small birds in their strong webs. While some blue fang spiderlings have been found to be somewhat arboreal, adults of this species prefer to remain firmly on the ground.
