To mark the beginning of National Invasive Species Awareness Week, let’s take a look at a beautiful species, that outside of its home range, can cause a great deal of havoc. Originally found in northern Pacific waters and areas surrounding Japan, Russia, North China, and Korea, the northern Pacific seastar has successfully invaded the southern coasts of Australia after being brought over unintentionally in the ballast water of ships. As an aggressive eater, these seastars will consume almost everything that crosses their path. They also reproduce rapidly and can quickly take over areas once inhabited by native species. In one area where they were introduced, their population reached an estimated 12 million seastars in just two years. Explosive growth like this can cause great ecological harm, altering the way an entire ecosystem functions. Because the seastar is well established and abundantly widespread, eradication is almost impossible, however prevention and control measures are being implemented to stop the species from establishing in new waters.
