Found throughout the western United States, mule deer like this one @southwestwildlife are relatively easy to identify thanks to their large mule-like ears that set them apart from other deer species. During the summer and fall, males of this species will also grow distinctive antlers which they later shed in the spring. As residents of the western US, mule deer have had to adapt to living in desert regions in order to thrive. They do this by conserving energy during the day, becoming most active at night or during the early morning hours when temperatures are most tolerable. In addition, they have adapted to eating a wide variety of vegetation types in order to meet all of their nutritional needs. During the hottest parts of the summer the mule deer will move to higher elevations, then retreat to lower elevations during the winter months. When possible, they may also inhabit mountain forests and wooded hills.
