Vervets are the most widespread of the African monkeys, inhabiting large parts of sub-Saharan Africa. These primates are what we call habitat generalists - they are tolerant of a wide variety of habitats and can live in humid rainforests, semi-desert environments, or even swamps. As long as they have access to water and trees to sleep in, vervets can make themselves at home almost anywhere. Their diet is also generalized, and while they have a preference for fruit and flowers, they will vary their diet tremendously from month to month to cope with fluctuations in food availability. In more developed areas, vervets are less subject to seasonal availability because they depend on sources of food provided by humans including cultivated fruits, vegetables, and other crops. As a result, these monkeys have become an increasing nuisance to farmers whose crops are often damaged as a result of the vervet’s raiding behavior. In most areas throughout their range, humans hunt vervets either for meat or as a means to control the population. For many researchers, vervets are important for the study of high blood pressure and AIDS. They are one of the few species of nonhuman primates that naturally develop high blood pressure and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), the ancestor of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
