Kangaroo rats like this one can jump an incredible distance of 45 times their own body length, making them the longest jumpers of all mammals in relation to their body size. They use this impressive ability in order to avoid predators, first facing away from their enemy and using their powerful hind legs to spray sand in the predator’s eyes before making their escape. A strictly solitary critter, the Ord’s kangaroo rat will only allow their mate to approach them during mating seasons. Encounters during other times of the year may result in fights involving aerial collisions of the hind legs which are used to slash at one another. As a result of their solitary lifestyle, these rats are quite quiet, rarely making any vocal calls. Instead, they use their hind legs to make loud thumping noises in their burrow when they sense the entrance has been disturbed. The Ord’s kangaroo rat is the most widespread of all kangaroo rats, found through much of western North America from Saskatchewan to Mexico.
