This stunning serpent is a white-lipped island pit viper @woodlandparkzoo. Found across the lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia, this venomous, island-dwelling snake is an aggressive predator, making it an intimidating presence in the streets of Bali, where it’s one of the most common causes of venomous bites. While such bites can be quite unpleasant, their venom rarely kills humans, and is reserved whenever possible for use on target prey species like mice and lizards. Once the venom has subdued the snake’s prey, the viper will use its fangs to ‘walk’ its prey into its mouth. This island species is related to the white-lipped pit viper, a snake endemic to Southeast Asia. What’s particularly special about this incredible creature is the fact that despite its name, most white-lipped pit vipers are actually a vibrant green-yellow, as you can see in this image. Snakes such as this one play an important role in helping to control rodent populations, which in turn protects many human populations from the spread of disease.
