Today marks the beginning of National Aardvark Week! Aardvarks like this one @theomahazoo live throughout Africa, south of the Sahara Desert. Their name comes from South Africa's Afrikaans language and means “earth pig,” but if you look closely you’ll see that the aardvark appears to borrow features from many different animals! Aardvarks are nocturnal, spending the day holed up in cool underground burrows then emerging after sunset to acquire their favorite food—termites. Habitat loss threatens this species throughout the African continent, but hunting for bushmeat is also an increasing threat to Aardvark populations in some countries.
