I made a friend ? All the cows of India are so endearing. You really get the sense that they’re sentient beings, with feelings and all, just like dogs and cats. Growing up in Miami, I never had any close contact with animals other than dogs, cats and peacocks (which are wild around my childhood home) until I traveled to India around 20 years ago. The cow is said to be sacred, a being who gives more than she receives, like the Earth. For centuries the cow has been a vital part of traditional Indian life, as the foundation of agriculture in ancient India. Cows had their own shelters called gaushalas which were often larger than people’s homes. It wasn’t until British colonial rule in 1760 that a slaughterhouse for cows was introduced. Up until then cow eating and cow slaughter was outlawed. While the laws haven’t banned cow eating in present day India, there are still more vegetarians in India by a percentage of the population than anywhere else in the world—over 40% in India and where the world average is 10%.. _ How about you?
