People used to accuse me of sexualizing yoga. That was before naked yoga and thong leotards got popular. Now my small shorts are no longer shocking. I personally don’t like to practice naked (I like my girls to be snug when I’m jumping to handstand) and thong leotards are not my thing (I feel like a fashion victim in them, but please rock them if you love them). And yet I still gets lots of ? in my DMs. _ So I’d like to make a point. There is a difference between sensuality and sexuality. While yoga is undoubtedly sensual, people often mistake that for sex. Yoga utilizes the organs of the senses, yet it is not necessarily sexual. Sexuality is erotic in its goal. Yoga is spiritual in its goal. If you have ever tried to put your leg behind your head amidst a challenging practice, you know that sex is the last thing on your mind. In my experience, it’s mostly people who don’t have a practice who see a yoga pose and immediately feel lust. _ Sensuality is the world of the sense, as in sight, sound, taste, smell and touch. Yoga as practice seeks to turn the powers of the senses to the inner world. This is the first step in pratyahara, withdrawal of the senses from the outer world and the redirection of the senses to the inner world. You have to feel everything— emotions, your body, pleasure and pain. But not to the end of getting addicted to the feeling. In fact, over-sensualizing yoga is itself a trap of the mind. If you get caught looking for that yummy feel good hit it’s like a drug and your dopamine receptors will hunger for that next high. _ Yoga as a practice has this thesis: there is truth, deep truth about life, God, the spirit. That truth cannot be understood through the mind alone, it must be experienced for any revelation to be real. Fascination with the material world is is addictive and if left unchecked leads to a never-ending stream of the next desire. Chasing that leaves you defeated, disillusioned and disappointed. Yoga says to turn the senses within. There, deep in the innermost regions of the body itself, is a pathway to the subtle rarefied realm of the spirit. Keep practicing until you find it. _ I’m in Stockholm this weekend @atmajyotiyoga ?
