This picture is too happy for how I feel right now. Not because I’m not happy, I am in fact feeling impossibly happy and grateful right now. It’s too happy bc I just left Bali where this photo was taken and today another strong earthquake hit an already ravaged region of Indonesia. Registering around 6 magnitude, the series of three very strong plus a multitude of lesser earthquakes devastated the island of Lombok. It’s estimated that 150,000 people are now homeless, the death toll is rising and the aftershocks don’t stop. The buildings and structures that cracked, but survived the first big quake suffered further damage in the second massive one. Then the third big one hit today and many more homes were turned into piles of rubble. _ Someone asked me why I don’t go to the disaster area to help out in Indonesia. Well, while I appreciate the sentiment of helping it’s not the best way I can help. My area of expertise and training isn’t disaster relief. I’m spreading awareness and encouraging people to open their hearts to the reality of the suffering of their fellow humans, which is more my area of expertise. I’m not a trained aid-worker or a person with a badly needed skill set and I feel that I can best support disaster relief by giving funds to local efforts under way and shining light on a situation. Not to mention the idea that I as a foreigner would bring some special super power that the local Indonesian people couldn’t sounds like colonial thinking to me. Now if the local government issued a call for all hands on deck, civilian, foreign, etc., that’s a different story. But right now what’s needed is to support the disaster relief already under way and to not let the suffering of the real people of Indonesia fade from our consciousness when the proverbial page turns. _ Donate to Red Cross/Red Cresent of Indonesia— http://www.pmi.or.id _ Donate to Islamic Relief— https://irusa.org/indonesia-2018-earthquake-emergency/ _ Our practice prepares us for moments like this, to open our hearts and minds, to stay connected with the suffering of others and to do what we can, when we can, every chance we get. _ This is Day 9 #gracefulstrengthchallenge
