I have always respected science. I am deeply troubled by what appears to be a rebellion against facts. Science is not infallible and scientists are not gods. But, science itself transcends the individual’s faults. It is a higher calling to the objective and perhaps absolute truth. It is also humble, having been proven true, it holds that truth only until it is disproven. Science assumes that the scientist may not have all the answers and that one day whatever thesis is proven may be refuted. Science acknowledges our limitations as human beings while setting the bar high for what we may achieve through the higher mind. The scientific method is defined as the method wherein inquiry regards itself as fallible and purposely tests itself and criticizes, corrects, and improves itself. In other words, it is based on reason. Reason is, however, nothing more than a shared sensibility of norms. If reason itself is rejected and traded in for the emotional, then we are left with billions of subjective truths that have no veracity other than that which we assert. Rational inquiry takes for a basis the idea that we agree on basic logical constructs. Deconstructing and challenging scientific theses is one thing, but to reject outright an entire epistemology simply because it is inconvenient or upsetting is a cowardly stance. When science and truth become ugly words to be thrown away when we don’t like what they say, then all we are left with is subjective truth—the emotions, the ego, likes, dislikes, opinions. If we base our actions solely in the realm of what we feel we will be riding our unconscious, unquestioned assumptions straight into a collision course with reality. It’s one thing to do this as an individual but to do this as a position of public policy is frankly irresponsible. The choice seems evident to me. We can either subject our deeply held assumptions about the world, whether personal or public, to a systematic study aimed at the revelation of truth or we can hold on to whatever feels good and let the ego pummel us forward into a series of disastrous events. Remember that yoga is a science of the human spirit and that practice is an education in the truth.
