Who remembers the good old days of @Instagram when posts were chronological, the explore page was a democratic sampling of the most popular posts in the world, when an algorithm wasn’t the driver of content? I do. This was all before FB bought this app.

I returned from vacation to read the news that the federal government is holding proceedings to determine if FB is in violation of the anti-trust act. To find FB in violation, they have to show that the company conducted an intentional campaign to buy competitors like IG regarded as future threats, even if they were fledgling start-ups at the time. And then the agency would need to be able to demonstrate economic harm, like higher prices for advertisers and degraded service for users. So... what do you think?
_
There are certainly lots of improvements FB added, like IGtv, live-streams, DMs and longer playing videos. Those are fun features. There are also sponsored ads popping up and an algorithmically created echo chamber for the world’s most extreme views. I’ve experienced lower engagement and a feeling that to actually connect with people on IG you need to game the system. There is also so much personal data tracking by one non-regulated corporate entity that it’s a bit scary. So, was it worth it? If you could choose, would you keep IG as is or go back to the pre-FB world? Would you vote to split up the monopoly that FB has created or are you happy with it as is?
_
And that’s just IG. Let’s not forget WhatsApp that FB also owns. How many other fledgling start-ups that we don’t know about have gotten bought up along the way?

Before someone tells me to “stick to yoga” bear in mind that this is a field that I can certainly claim to have some direct experience and expertise in and certainly a bit of personal interest in.

I don’t know about good old days unless you’re referring to those@times when eye contact and substance was all in a conversation. That aside, I do like that we have been able to bridge geography and connect or observe what interests people around. That said I’m not so sure about a lot of this although I do use it. FB is too intrusive so I just have it as a placeholder. IG is interesting and I use it to motivate me such as getting back into yoga and exercise in general. I have enjoyed studying the poses and seeing the improvement over time. I don’t like it when the criticism piles in. That is just absurd especially when we are dealing with people and their personal lives. To the extent people can feel that other people can share in an experience and the like it is positive. Still looking forward to possibilities with these platforms. I hope that helps.

Wow. Great photograph. IMO, FB has run amok, promising privacy and accountability, but delivering neither. In fact, FB invades our privacy ever more insidiously, while Z'berg whines and promises changes. Will I give up on FB? Not yet, many hundreds of my photos are in FB, and i like sharing them with friends. IG is not as friendly or easy to use, at least for me... and Ive found no way to create albums od common photographs. Still... wish we had better more accountable and less intrusively greedy platforms on which to share ideas, photos, thoughts, advice.

The old way. Of course, updates and improvements would’ve still occurred but I imagine it would’ve felt/feel more like its original intention. Also, caring about what’s happening in the world IS yoga, this idea of ‘staying in your lane’ is about separation and disconnection- quite the opposite of a practice that is rooted in fully realizing that all is one. I appreciate when yogis get involved in important matters facing humanity and the planet, in fact we should feel a responsibility to do so.

I also preferred it before. It was easier to find different content. Now I see the same 5 people, out of 400+ accounts I follow, with nearly an equal number of ads! (Luckily you’re one of the 5 people I see, lol) I miss out on fun challenges because I see the posts 2-3 days later once enough people have “liked” them. Super annoying. Do you know where we can go to comment to the FCC?? I’m also concerned about the T-Mobile/Sprint merger raising prices for phone service!!

I deleted my FB account mostly because of its use of annoying algorithm’s. And now I’m losing interest in using Instagram for the same reasons. I dislike the way FB wants to manipulate what you see. And they care more about the revenue they make from ads than making a wonderful platform for the good of the communities. It’s all about money at the end of the day. But despite all this I do love all your posts . You still manage to use Instagram well 💕xxx

Omg i’ll go back to old ig anytime!!! I used it because i hated fb. Because ig allowed to connect to like-minded people, and fb was... lets say not my type of engagement. And now you have to buy expensive ebooks to actually trick other people to like you. Literally nobody likes or comments for free anymore. I still do because i believe there are still people who would like to see real feedback from real people.❤️❤️
