Ever wonder how lemurs like this Van der Decken’s sifaka got their name? Local Malagasy people named them for the unique call they send echoing through Madagascar's forests, which sounds like shif-auk. As vegetarians, these primates spend their days foraging for flowers, leaves, fruit, and tree bark, and are known to consume nearly 100 different plant species. They need the forest to survive, and the forests of Madagascar depend on lemurs to help maintain the health and reproduction of many tree species. This is no easy feat for the lemurs as forests within this sifakas’ range are already highly fragmented - burned to provide pasture for livestock and cut for charcoal production. Groups like GERP (Groupe d’étude et de recherche sur les primates), a Malagasy led association based in Madagascar, are dedicated to protecting lemurs so that future generations will have the chance to see them living and coexisting with humans. Click the link in my bio to sign a petition letting Malagasy leaders know that you are concerned about the future of the island's wildlife and its people and encourage them to take action to conserve Madagascar’s biodiversity. Video taken at Lemuria Land in Madagascar. #lemur #sifaka #madagascar #deckenssifaka #vegetarian #photoark #savetogether
