In honor of World Meerkat Day, we’re celebrating these incredible critters by taking a closer look at this slender-tailed meerkat @millerparkzoo. You might not have guessed it from their almost delicate appearance, but this species is among the toughest you’ll find in the animal kingdom. Because of their immunity to some venom, they are able to kill and eat venomous snakes and scorpions without being hurt in the long term. They can also survive without drinking water, getting all of the moisture they need from eating roots, tubers, and melons! Meerkats belong to large groups called gangs, or mobs, and together they work to build underground burrows and alert each other when potential predators are lurking nearby. Well adapted for their environment, this species is doing all right in the wild, and they continue to play an important role in keeping their ecosystem balanced by keeping populations of insects and lizards in check. #worldmeerkatday #slendertailedmeerkat #timon #cute #tough #photoark #savetogether
