Can you tell the difference between American and European bison? European bison like this one @parconaturaviva are smaller in stature than their American relatives, and tend to have hairier tails. Their head is also set at a slightly higher angle, which is attributed to the European bison feeding on higher foliage in woodlands versus ground-level grasses. This species was once common throughout forests in much of Europe, but forestry and farming drove the bison out of their natural habitat leading to massive population declines. By 1927, fewer than 50 European bison existed - all of which resided in zoos. Since then, breeding programs done through groups like @parconaturaviva have helped to increase the number of European bison, and a number of herds have been returned to the wild in several countries. 2018 marked the fifth annual bison release that @rewildingeurope has done in cooperation with @wwf.romania.#nationalbisonmonth #europeanbison #speciesrecovery #photoark #savetogether
This year, @parconaturaviva is celebrating 50 years of protecting endangered species in in-situ and ex-situ conservation programmes. This photo was taken thanks to the support of @greenteenteam.

After recently visiting Yellowstone, I can see a big difference between the two bison. The American bison are all big and bulky across the shoulders, neck and hips and the European bison look as though they just left the gym, lol! So glad to see the huge impact conservation g can make of man's past ignorance.

What’s the difference between a buffalo and a bison? You can’t wash your face in a buffalo.
Sadly this English joke no longer works as no-one says “bison” for basin any longer. It’s a very old fashioned pronunciation.

Thanks for the info! Is the European Bison smaller than the American Bison? I know the American Bison is the largest land mammal in North America, and I wanted a comparison. Thank you!

There are still freely living European bisons (Zubor) on Slovak territory - in the national park Poloniny. They migrate on the border territory of Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine...
