Hi Again Everyone!
An update about our 'Prairie in Progress' here at Joel Sartore Photography, home of the Photo Ark.
Wanting to do our part to bring back the pollinators, we tilled large sections of both the front and back yards at our office, then set to work planting the seeds of native grasses and wildflowers provided by our friends at the Prairie Plains Resource Institute (@prairieplains) in Aurora, Nebraska.
Prairie restoration specialist Ben Vogt of @monarchgardensbenjaminvogt is shown hand-sowing thousands of tiny seeds, many of which will not really shine until next year!
This kind of effort takes a lot of time; we're still patiently waiting to figure out which of our seeds germinated, and which are weeds. We'll let things grow for a bit to figure it out.
Until then, we dream of the day when beautiful pollinators like this white lined sphinx and metallic green bee will return, to our little patch of prairie at least.
We'll keep you posted.
Joel

I absolutely love what you’re doing and am always mesmerized by your photos! I have to say though that tilling the soil is unnecessary and actually destroys the living organisms that live there which in turn make for healthier soil. Look into no-till resources, especially a book called A Soil Owner’s Manual by Jon Stika. It will change how you garden.

Tilled yard in Iowa planted local native prairie. Been in Oregon a month excited to see the growth when I get home after I visit the Loess hills and a iowa prairie on my way home to Iowa City. Best wishes. I had lots of baby Caterpillars on my milkweed when I left so hoping the first batch made their cycle and on to the nest!!

Inspiring! I have put a few mason bee houses in my yard this year to not only help my vegetable garden thrive but to try and help the bees find a home. Every little bit counts if many people pitch in. Love what you’re doing! I got to know you and photography through the great courses and your lectures.

I am in Minnesota and a prairie restoration company here started my yard 3 years ago. They tell me it takes 5 years to really get established because some seeds germinate way before others. It’s fun to watch the different flowers and grasses come in.

How uplifting to know that people like you exist in this world of poisonous green lawns created by the landscaping-industrial complex. Thank you for doing this and for sharing. You made my day ?

I did ripped out my lawn a few years ago and the explosion of pollinators in my yard has been amazing! I feel like Snow White every time I go out there! Native bees and bumblebees galore.
