This Northern rosella parrot may not be from the USA, but he’s certainly sporting patriotic colors in honor of Independence Day! Native to Western, North-western and Northern Australia, these birds are the epitome of charm and grace, which is reflected in their Latin name Platycercus venustus (venustus means charming in Latin). During breeding season, the courting male will bow forward, low on his perch while sounding out mating calls. A behavior returned by interested females. This presentation is usually followed by mutual feeding, and eventually, the act of mating. Wild rosellas usually nest near water, in the cavities of either dead or living trees, where they will care for their young until they are ready to venture away from home.
