Few birds look as fearsome as the bearded vulture. These giant birds can grow up to four feet tall and have close to a nine foot wingspan. As if their size wasn’t intimidating enough, these vultures apply soil stained with iron oxide to their feathers, ensuring a bright orange glow which can give them a fiery appearance. It could be their looks, or the fact that 80% of their diet consists of bone and bone marrow that led to the common belief that these birds would snatch and carry off human babies, a misconception that played a big role in this species being hunted to the brink of extinction in Eastern Europe. While the threat of hunting has decreased and reintroduction work is underway, the vultures are still at risk due to illegal use of poisoned baits set for wolves, foxes, jackals and crows. @ayelocke also I love how my comment is on the side of the endangered bird and you're just like "nah forget those birds I gotta take time out of my day to stalk this profile and then insult her about it in a comment muahaha?" - me mocking your internet presence

Bearded vultures are my favorite bird! Instead of having a diet consists primarily of dead flesh, they will eat the bones! They take the bone and fly high then drop it on a their favorite rock to smash it into pieces. Love love LOVE these birds.

I'm always shocked at our ignorance when it comes to the reasons why humans have hunted this or that species to extinction (or near so in this case).

But the #bartgeier was reintroduced in the Alps, in Germany, Austria and Switzerland ...successfully! and now the amazing birds are back ...
