Few birds look as fearsome as the bearded vulture. These giant birds can grow up to four feet tall and have close to a nine foot wingspan. As if their size wasn’t intimidating enough, these vultures apply soil stained with iron oxide to their feathers, ensuring a bright orange glow which can give them a fiery appearance. It could be their looks, or the fact that 80% of their diet consists of bone and bone marrow that led to the common belief that these birds would snatch and carry off human babies, a misconception that played a big role in this species being hunted to the brink of extinction in Eastern Europe. kamilbailey Bearded vultures are my favorite bird! Instead of having a diet consists primarily of dead flesh, they will eat the bones! They take the bone and fly high then drop it on a their favorite rock to smash it into pieces. Love love LOVE these birds.
