With nearly 2,000 species worldwide, fireflies are a familiar sight on summer evenings, recognized by people almost everywhere. But despite this widespread recognition, few people know that fireflies are not flies at all - they’re beetles! They are also winged, which distinguishes them from other luminescent insects known as glowworms. And just how do they produce that mesmerizing light? The insects take in oxygen and, inside special cells, combine it with a substance called luciferin to produce light with almost no heat. The flashing pattern used to display this light is unique to each species and serves as a signal that helps fireflies find potential mates. @dr_firefly you may (or may not) find it interesting that shining a black light flashlight on lighting bugs in my woods makes their glow ‘stay on’ until I redirect it ?

A firefly kept landing on my pool noodle a week ago. Later read, they’re trying to tell you something good is going to happen to you. I’m still waiting;)?

So many fond childhood memories of catching these in the evening and releasing them the next a.m. after they light up my room for the night?❤️

That’s so crazy how the ones in Chicago look completely different! And then the ones in Spain are like worms rather than beetles
