Found in North and Central Asia, the Siberian ibex is most at home in steep mountain terrains and alpine meadows. A type of wild goat, its diet consists of grass, herbs, shoots, stems and fruit, and a single ibex can consume up to 35 pounds of food per day. An appetite of that size is certainly impressive, but nothing quite compares to the size of the ibex’s horns. This striking feature has long caught the attention of trophy hunters, posing a major threat to the survival of this species, along with habitat destruction and competition for resources. Despite these factors and the presence of natural predators like snow leopards and brown bears, the population of Siberian ibex appears stable.
