Reminder: for the majority of the comm regime, Cubans were not allowed to even touch U.S. money, listen to U.S. music, learn English in school, or have an opinion about the gov! To this day they use ration cards for food, and almost everyone makes the same amount of money. But, your education, medical, house, etc is basically free...(the idea was "Everyone is equal....except the gov and their family") . Here's what's changed that I've noticed since I was last in Cuba 5 years ago: . - A lot of young people can speak English or are learning - There is a major entrepreneurship movement leading to people being able to make A LOT more money (mostly through renting out their homes, becoming guides, artists, drivers, photographers, musicians, etc) - There is also a major artist movement which is allowing the people to voice how they really feel (remember their voices have been suppressed by law for over 60 years) - There's more wifi availability (can't get a sim card there!) - The U.S. dollar is easily accepted (but FYI they just changed the currency...in the middle of my trip) - More and more buildings are being restored in Havana and many nice restaurants have opened, attracting more tourism - The countryside and jungles are lush and more encouraged to visit . I truly hope that when things get better politically (cough 0120) the U.S. will be able to help the people in Cuba more, and make relations great again, so you all can go visit this incredibly unique country, and ultimately help it's people as well! . Did you know these things about Cuba? Will you go visit when it's Ok to? . Highly recommend getting there through @havana_reverie , who custom created my tour based on what I wanted to see! .
