Wellp, in case you haven't heard, I had to flee Cuba. It's the first time I've been legitimately scared I was going to get stuck somewhere, and I only knew to leave because my flight got cancelled a week in advance, and all of my Cuban-American family in the US texted me "Get out NOW!" Which my mom said reminded her of when she was woken up to leave in '59 (the night the regime took over).
.
It took hours to scour every flight finder and airline website to find a flight out, and the internet blocks made it harder. Finally I got my VPN to work and found the next flight out for *only* $400 (the rest were $800+), but the blocks wouldn't let me use my cards, so I had to WhatsApp my mom in the US to do it! All went well, and we were back in the U.S. the next day (and hopefully getting refunded since I had travel insurance).
.
There is now only 1 flight per week to and from Cuba. It broke my heart to hear that, since they just re-opened and were so hopeful for tourism, and now it's completely gone again.
.
I thought the reason of course was the C-word. Even though their cases are low, masks are mandatory, and a vax is developed.
.
A few days later I see the breaking news that the U.S. has declared Cuba a T-word (rhymes with error-ist) State.
.
At first I was FURIOUS! How could we further take away from all of those people who have been suffering for over 60 years?! I saw their markets, they have no food! I saw my relatives, they are so skinny!
.
But knowing fully well there are two sides to everything, I did my research first. I know the U.S. is against the regime (as am I), and this move was supposedly meant to further pressure them to give up and form a democracy, which will ultimately help the people, although right now, the black listing will hurt them more.
.
The claim is that the regime is harboring (U.S.) people who have killed U.S. officers and others. And also highlights their ties with the evil Venezuelan leader. It has NOTHING to do with the innocent people of Cuba (the ones who are ultimately being punished for it).
.
So, I will leave you with that bc I'm out of room, will finish tomorrow...and ppl say "politics has nothing to do with travel"... 🤔
