There's a new kind of revolution happening in Cuba, and it's through the younger generation, and the arts and entrepreneurship!
.
You may think Havana is a place to go just to see the old cars, cigars, and a place that's "stuck in time", but you have to think about the fact that it is not that way voluntarily, there's really no other choice!
.
Imagine living in a lockdown...but for your whole life, and on an island that has scarce supplies and food for you, at all times. People thought running out of toilet paper was bad, imagine running out of food! Imagine not having supplies to fix your home, so it just crumbles. Imagine not having any supplies to pursue your career dreams!
.
This is largely due to the U.S. embargo, but during Obama-era, he lifted a lot of restrictions and made things easier for Cuba to get supplies, and make money through U.S. tourism. That was immediately reversed though with He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. That being said, they and I are all very much looking forward to another reversal again with the next prez.
.
Anyway, for decades Cuban peoples' voices were suppressed. Now, they are able to express themselves (and make a living!) through art, photography, music, and more! Young doctors, dentists, and lawyers are able to make 10x as much as their regulated salary (about $40-50/month) by renting out their homes as Casa Particulars, or using their old cars as taxis.
.
So when you go to Havana, please try to pay attention to and support these people!
.
The place in this photo is called "Casa Vieja" which translates to "Old House" because that's exactly what it is! An old, beautiful, three story house that has been transformed into an art place (like a mini Fábrica del Arte).
.
Artists and photographers are able to showcase their work here like a gallery, and musicians and DJs can perform! I'll be taking you inside and introducing some of the resident artists soon with the documentary I filmed to try to show people the many layers of Cuba, and the reality of it, through the voices of the people.
.
Would you want to watch it? Do you try to understand what local life is like when you travel?
