Liu Wei’s studio is located on the outskirts of Beijing, a liminal but nonetheless lively zone where the urban and countryside haphazardly co-exist. This studio is a quintessential model of one of the major artist “Studio Factories” that exist in Beijing. Out of all the large studios we visited, Liu’s is the biggest—the space occupies over a whopping 2000 square meters. Maintained with Fordist precision, he employs over 30 studio assistants at any given time who can work on different projects at once, mostly painting, installation and sculpture. In addition to the sheer scale of Liu’s creative operation, it’s his striking commitment to exploring the possibilities of digital color that captivates in his studio. Around every corner is new field of color that is all too easy to get swept up in.
