Wildly charismatic, artist Cao Fei’s (@cao_fei) studio is a formerly abandoned movie theater in China, built in the 1950s with Soviet-influenced architectural details. In addition, scattered around the theater are unofficial architectural homages to the 2008 Beijing Olympics—a pair of faux leather doors with a wonky Olympic ring emblem imprinted in them with nailheads. 2008 was also the year this theater forced to close down due to the building not being able meet safety code requirement. In addition to the original details, Cao has peppered around her studio 1950s vintage items like posters and furniture, making the studio into a kind of evolving, parafictional work.
