Artist Yu Hong’s studio is located in the 798 district and is an energetic space full of humor and contradictions. Right when you step into the courtyard of her studio, you see an old desktop computer from 1991 positioned like a shrine or fountain in the open area. Stepping into her studio you hear the sound of Italian opera blasting from speakers and smell a linseed oil aroma from her carefully organized paints. A prolific painter, she is currently working on a new series for her upcoming exhibition in Shanghai. Her work not only flaunts some serious technical chops, but her paintings also compel due to the psychologically riveting nature of her subject matter. The large three-panel painting you see here places the figurative body in the midst of formidable landscapes. In addition to getting to see some new work, Yu shared with me some earlier works from some past series in her studio.
