Artist Qiu Zhijie’s studio is bifurcated into two separate studios: one for ink on paper or water based mediums, and one for sculpture. Not only is Qiu a prolific artist, but he is also a professor, curator and all around busybody that is always working on multiple projects. This creative, frantic, and busy energy can be felt in his studio, which can best be described as “organized chaos.” When I visited him, he had just opened a solo exhibition at the Mingshen Museum in Beijing, so his sculpture studio was primarily empty. Therefore, we spent the most of our time in his painting studio, which juxtaposed a traditional ink painting setup with offbeat organizational systems. The ways in which he organized his studio clutter was dynamic and whimsical; for example, there was a highly organized section for “bad quality xuan pape,” xuan means rice (7th image). Another particularly charming moment was an ink painted paper mâché globe object (4th image). All these different elements gave Qiu’s studio a very anachronistic and mischievous vibe to the space, which created a new context to view some of his famous “maps”. Surrounded by brushes, pigments, lots of antique furniture, and a little bit of disorder; these maps took on a new energy and humor.—@xzhunowell #GuggenheimTravel #ArtAndChina #Guggenheim #QiuZhijie #GuggenheimTakeover
