Out of all the artists we visited, artist Ding Yi has by far the most streamlined practice. Since the 1990s, he has almost exclusively devoted himself to a single effort—creating abstract paintings built up of small crosses. This relentless creative drive made visiting his studio all the more intriguing. Like a laboratory; this large, massive industrial studio space was designed to experiment with all aspects of how these crosses are painted; including dimensions, color, and material. At the moment, the color red (and BRIGHT reds specifically) dominate his investigations, which you can see in these pictures. But also present in the studio are carefully organized pigments from different experimentations that range from bright neons to pastels. During the visit, he showed me a new series of paintings that are under development—building up layers and layers of paint that are ultimately scraped away—like a relief sculpture out of oil paint. —@xzhunowell #GuggenheimTravel #ArtAndChina #Guggenheim #DingYi #GuggenheimTakeover
