Located on the outskirts of Shanghai proper, visiting Xu Zhen’s “studio” is much like taking a trip down Alice’s rabbit hole. I put “studio” in quotations because since 2009, Xu Zhen has revoked his title as an artist and has instead been working as the “creative director” of MadeIn Company, a contemporary art corporate entity he founded that plays off of the phrase “Made in China.” The largest faction of the MadeIn Company headquarters we visited is dedicated to facilitating large scale studio production; however, the company also has expanded into curatorial research and publications. Images here show the making of “Under Heaven,” or “cake paintings,” series. These works essentially utilize paint as “icing” on canvas, and are created with pastry bags filled with oil paint. We can also see a “score sheet” of samples of different icing techniques and color. The studio also hosted lunch for us during our visit, where Xu Zhen invited some of his artist friends and close collaborators to join us.
