I visited artist Yang Fudong at the Long Museum in Shanghai on the first day that his current exhibition, “Dawn Breaking,” was open to the public. While not technically an “artist studio,” this project literally brought a fully functional film studio into the museum. This ambitious project constructed two movie sets in the museum, and for an entire month Fudong and his film crew will be present at the museum, shooting a new work that will be gradually displayed in an adjacent gallery space to where the film is being shot. In a first for the artist, visitors to the exhibition will be able to witness the filmmaking process unfold as part of the exhibition. This gesture is less of a “behind the scenes” effort and more of a conceptual continuation of Fudong’s interest in cinema as a process, a particular form of image-making that unfolds physically as well as in individual and collective memories. The beauty of this project is being about to witness the dynamic, collaborative energy on set, with life spilling into every corner.
