Bakasana has always been hard for me. I used to think I could only do this arm balance with the help of friction. I would even bring a long sleeve shirt or leggings just for this pose. I had no shoulder strength, no core strength. I just always felt like my body weight was dumping on to my arms. My wrists felt stiff too! It was like I had no hope. But the practice changes everything eventually!

I still remember the first time I was in India and saw all the strong male practitioners wearing shorts and sweating like crazy in the heat and doing all these insane arm balance. All the ladies, myself included, used friction to balance. Not only did I already prefer to wear shorts being from Florida where it’s hot and sunny most of the year, but I really saw how holding your body up exactly when you feel like you’re sliding down your arms builds so much strength. It was then that I decided, no more friction! If I was going to slide down my arms, then I’d get stronger by fighting for every inch.

Be strong. The lesson I learned is that strength happens by finding the power to push through exactly when you want to give up.
